Colombiana (15) ****
Directed by: Olivier Megaton
Starring: Zoe Saldana, Cliff Curtis, Michael Vartan

LUC Besson is great at doing three things: making films about assassins (Nikita, Leon), creating action stars (Milla Jovovich, Jason Statham, Liam Neeson) and delivering implausible plots so outlandishly entertaining you feel like an idiot for questioning them. In Colombiana he pulls off the superlative trick of satisfying on all three counts, which is no mean feat given that Besson serves only as the film's co-writer and producer (as he tends to do these days). Instead, directing duties have been undertaken by the brilliantly monikered Olivier Megaton, whose ready-to-rock name will be familiar to anyone who bore witness to the genius that was Transporter 3 – another Besson collaboration and, for my money, the finest Statham film to date.

Here he takes Besson's favourite sub-genre and delivers a film that not only feels like an amped-up spiritual cousin to Leon, but elevates Zoe Saldana into that league of women action stars who no longer have play second fiddle to men. Admittedly that league only really includes Angelina Jolie and Milla Jovovich, but having paid her dues in Avatar only to wind up as eye-candy in slop like The Losers and Takers, there was no guarantee Saldana would ever get the chance to show what she could really do in her own star vehicle. Here she seizes every scene she's in and makes it her own, prowling, pouncing and punching her way through the film with the kind of swaggering confidence that announces her as a proper, fully-fledged movie star, one who is able to carry any material no matter how ridiculous it is. And make no mistake: Colombiana is ridiculous. It kicks off in Bogotá in 1992, where we're introduced to Saldana's character, Catalaya, as a little girl who is about to be orphaned by a vicious Colombian drug cartel. Making her escape by stabbing her parents' killer in the hand and high-tailing it through the window, she manages to get to America with the help of some American federal agents who are interested in a microchip her father left with her for insurance purposes.

Pluckily giving the Feds the slip the moment she lands Stateside (the microchip and its significance are quickly forgotten about), she tracks down her somewhat shady uncle Emilio (Cliff Curtis), who takes her in and puts her in school. When she tells him she wants to learn how to kill, not count, he shoots up a passing car outside her school to make her understand that a contract killer has to be book smart as well as street smart – a curious lesson, but one that seems to sink in, since the next time we meet Catalaya she's all grown up, has taken the form of Saldana, and has managed to become the kind of elite female assassin that can orchestrate a hit inside a prison by getting herself arrested and sneaking around the air vents of a police station in a blue catsuit.
